€100m Sligo N4 scheme approved

Sligo County Council announced this week that “Sligo’s largest infrastructure project in modern times” will not go ahead as An Bord Pleanála has given Planning Approval for the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development. The council also noted that An Bord Pleanála has confirmed the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the Scheme. This decision follows an An Bord Pleanala Oral Hearing on the Development which took place in the Castledargan Hotel at the end of April this year.

ECOFACT ecologists attended this oral hearing, and successfully defended the ecology evidence. The news report from Sligo Today can be found here.

This scheme will provide a new 14.71km Type 2 Dual-carriageway road and associated works between the existing Dual Carriageway at Collooney and the end of the Curlews By-Pass just east of Castlebaldwin.

ECOFACT prepared the Ecology Chapter of the Environmental Impact Statement, and also the Natura Impact Statement. All specialist studies on wetland habitats, bats, terrestrial mammals, birds, fish populations, amphibians and terrestrial macroinvertebrates (including Vertigo geyeri, and Marsh Fritillary) were completed by ECOFACT. We are therefore delighted with this project success having  worked on all ecology elements of this project over the past number of years.

Further details regarding the scheme can be found here. The Ecology Chapter which we prepared is available for download here. The Natura Impact Statement, also prepared by ECOFACT, can be accessed here.
